We have managed client capital since 2015
That period has included prolonged low interest rates, the COVID-19 market shock, the return of inflation, rapidly rising interest rates and heightened geopolitical uncertainty. Our team’s investment experience extends further, including through the Global Financial Crisis. We do not treat having lived through those periods as a credential on its own. What matters is how an investment process holds up when conditions change, liquidity deteriorates or a strongly held view proves wrong. We have had to make those decisions with real client capital while events were unfolding.
We are owned by the people running the firm
Ownership matters because it affects who ultimately carries responsibility for the decisions we make. That is why Banyantree remains 100% management-owned. The people responsible for the investment work are also directly responsible for the business, its client relationships and its long-term reputation.
External inputs
We use external information extensively. Market data, company disclosures, company and manager meetings, specialist research and other market participants all contribute to our work. We do not outsource the judgement.
Conflicts and disclosure
Potential conflicts can still arise. We and members of our team may from time to time have interests or relationships relevant to investments we discuss. Where a relevant conflict requires disclosure, we disclose it. The investment conclusion remains ours.
How we are paid
Our revenue comes from research subscriptions and management fees on the portfolios we manage. We do not charge a performance fee. No manager pays us for research coverage. We do not operate a brokerage or trading desk, and we do not provide investment banking, corporate advisory or capital raising.
40+ years across investment management and financial markets
Our backgrounds span institutional funds management, sell-side investment research, investment banking, trading, hybrid securities, financial accounting and direct company finance.
Institutional experience before Banyantree
We worked at Morgan Stanley, Aberdeen Asset Management, RBC Capital Markets and IOOF, now Insignia Financial, across investment banking, funds management, institutional equity research, trading and company finance.
Institutional research and portfolio responsibility
Our experience includes lead portfolio responsibility for Australian small companies, institutional equity research across basic materials and industrial companies, global equity research, and lead responsibility for ASX-listed hybrid securities, including valuation and assessment of new issues.
Transactions, markets and company accounts
We have worked on investment banking transactions in financials and listed property, run an institutional trading desk, assessed new security issues, and prepared financial statements, funding projections and management reporting inside an operating business.
The work is shared. Responsibility stays clear.
We operate with a relatively flat investment structure. Research is shared across the team, investment views are discussed and assumptions are challenged. The role we take on varies across client relationships. In each case, responsibility needs to stay clear and the underlying work needs to be understood by more than one person.
Flat structure
We do not organise the process around a single personality. Strong views are challenged by the team before they become the firm’s view. The process allows for disagreement, while someone remains accountable for the work and the investment decision.
Client relationships
The relationship depends on the role we have been asked to play. Research clients make the investment decisions themselves. Managed Account clients delegate the decisions set out in an agreed mandate. Some use both services. In each case, the division of responsibility should be clear.
Continuity
A small investment firm carries key-person risk. No team structure eliminates it completely. We reduce dependence on any one individual through shared research, retained decision records and overlapping responsibilities. If someone is unavailable, another investment manager can see the underlying work, understand the assumptions and take it forward.
